Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken skiing backcountry in San Lorenzo Peak, in Spain.

Time

I took this photo on our first run in the morning, around 9 a.m. when temperatures were still very low and everything remained frozen.

Lighting

The Sun is your best friend when taking photos in the nature, so try to find a day and hour with a smooth light and you won't need anything else.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 7D with a Sigma 10-20 mm lens on it. When you are skiing backcountry, every single pound that you have on your backpack may be too much weight, so we always try to bring the bare minimum weight.

Inspiration

I was looking for a creative angle, something different than all backcountry skiing photos that I am used to see. We were skiing inside of a forest and found this rock to jump off, so I went first to take the photo. I didn't realize that the branches were there until I jumped and almost failed because of them. I thought that I had found the perfect frame for my photo!

Editing

Nothing big. I just adjusted the levels and the colors. I don't like to edit my photos too much.

In my camera bag

As I said before, when skiing backcountry, every pound you have in your backpack counts, so I usually have a Canon Eos 7D and no more than 3 lenses and a speedlite flash. I always bring my Canon 70-200 L f2,8 and the 24-105 L f4 because they are great lenses. Moreover, I like to have a wide angle lens so I choose between a Sigma 10-20 or a Samyang 8 mm.

Feedback

If you want to take a photo like this one, you must be a good skier! You can not park in the parking lot and take a photo like this one. You have to be where the action is! Look for magazines or other photographers to see what are they doing then ... look for a photo completely different!
