Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken earlier this year when i was on a 10 day road trip round Iceland. One of the best trips i have ever done. The landscapes are amazing as you can see in this photograph of Vestrahorn.
Time
We got up early as we were heading along the south coast towards Vik. Before leaving the south east i had to have one last stop at Vestrahorn. It was really worth the stop as the tide had gone out and left a huge pool of water for a fantastic reflection.
Lighting
It was a rather cloudy morning but it was bright enough to not have to use a high ISO. The day before when we were here it was much brighter but so windy. The light catches the mountain really well and makes it stand out against the black sanded beaches that surround.
Equipment
A couple of days before id had a accident with my Nikon D800, luckily i had a spare camera with me. The Nikon D600 is a very capable camera and was a fantastic replacement to have. The mountain is a lot bigger than it looks so i needed a Nikon 18-35mm at 18mm to fit it all in. This was mounted to my travel tripod a Manfrotto Befree.
Inspiration
Iceland has amazing landscapes round every corner, be it an epic mountain, fast flowing waterfall or a unforgiving seascape. Vestrahorn is up there with the best landscapes in the country. It was a must visit, so much of a must i visited twice.
Editing
Where the mountain is so big and i had to be close to the wear for the reflection 3 photos were needed to get the whole range in. I used Lightroom to make the 3 photo panorama. I took the saturation down and some colours out completely. I mostly shoot black and white but the soft colours of the mountain gave it more depth than the mono version.
In my camera bag
For the trip around Iceland there was no travelling light. I had my full equipment with me. A Nikon D800, D600 and infrared converted D7000. Using mostly wide angle lenses i had a Nikon 18-35mm, Nikon 20mm and a Sigma 35mm. I also had a Nikon 85mm and a 70-200mm. I had most lengths covered with this set up . I also had a selection of ND filters for the many long exposure photos that i too. A cable release remote, a torch, rain cover and spare batteries completed the set up.
Feedback
Iceland is an amazing country with so many landscapes to photograph. Everywhere you look there is something to point your camera at. The 10 day trip around the country is highly recommended but if you haven't got so long there are many places to visit with in a hours drive from the airport. Anyone thinking of going just go and book your flights, you won't regret it.
