Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo out at one of our provincial parks up north in Cold Lake. It was a wildly cold night and I had just finished a hockey game and managed to forget to put socks on in my rush to get out shooting. My ankles were very frozen in this photo.

Time

I remember watching the northern light in the bus on the way home from the game. I would've got back close to midnight so I would image this shot was taken around 1-2am!

Lighting

Yes! I had been planning this shot for a couple months, but needed a night with a full moon and extra bright northern lights. I wanted the whole foreground to be lit, but I also didn't want the northern lights to be washed out. This was a stroke of luck to have a night with a largely full moon and kp6 northern lights.

Equipment

This shot used a Canon 70D, Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens and Mefoto globetrotter tripod.

Inspiration

The emotion I wanted to portray was awe or wonder. Living in an area where I get to see the northern lights so often is a real blessing and I wanted to share that feeling with those that saw the image. I wanted people to feel like they could be that person in the image, standing in the snow, looking up at the incredible show mother nature is sharing.

Editing

Very little. I used Lightroom to fix up some WB correcting, sharpen the edges and upped the contrast a bit.

In my camera bag

Back then I didn't even have a bag, just a camera, 2 lenses and a tripod. But now I always make sure to bring a full landscape kit, which for me means, an ultrawide lens, a fast wide angle lens, a sturdy tripod, full set of ND and polarized filters, a remote trigger and lots of snacks!

Feedback

The big reason I chose this photo out of the others from the night was the use of the light in front of me. I was playing around with ways to separate myself and make the green jacket pop. The light made a very clear distinction of foreground and background.
