The photo was taken mid morning- maybe around 9am. This is not the ideal time to be out photographing, but fortunately, it was partly cloudy, which helped to soften the sunlight. Also, the sun had not fully risen in the sky yet, and about half of the building was still in shadow.Lighting
Lighting can make or break a photo. You can still make a decent photo with not great lighting, but to make it sing, the lighting should be good. However, break some rules if it's for a purpose.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 7D. No flash, no tripod. When I travel, I usually shoot in aperture priority so that I don't miss a shot, or miss something interesting because I'm still setting up.Inspiration
Nature, landscape, and architecture inspire me most. I saw this beautiful, old building, reflecting on the lake with a picturesque bridge going over it. It called to me. I couldn't NOT take the photo.Editing
I very rarely edit my photos, and this one has not been edited at all. I like to get them as perfect as possible within the frame. Maybe I'm wrong, but I also dislike when I see a photograph of a place that looks beautiful, but when I go there, it looks nothing like the photograph. I want my photos to be accurate portrayals. I want to inspire people to see the world, but not be disappointed when they get there that it doesn't look as great as the photo. The world is a beautiful place; it doesn't need enhancement by me.In my camera bag
I have a standard lens, a zoom lens, a macro lens, my camera, of course, a remote shutter release, two spare batteries, and about 10 memory cards. I also try to carry my tripod with me.Feedback
Find a subject you want to photograph. Walk all around it to find an angle that attracts your attention, and look for interesting extras, like reflections or shadows. Maybe the photo needs a person in it to give scale, purpose, or tell a story.
