The shot was taken on top of the colosseum in rome, italy. I was on the way to South Africa with a friend, but we got a one night stop-over in Rome, so we decided to give it a try and we got lucky. There is also a video on outube showing our sneaky action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hymK_qVlxe4Time
It was about haf past 1 in the morning as we started to walk around the colosseum and searched for an entry. Round about one hour later we left the colosseum without attracting attention or being seen.Lighting
The panorama photo consists of 6 single pictures with an exposure time of 10 seconds each. I closed the aperture till f11 to get these little light stars, which you can see in the photo.Equipment
The shot was taken with a nikon d750 + nikon 16mm-35mm f4, and for sure I took this shot with a tripod. ;-)Inspiration
The colosseum has a very long history and was considered one of the largest and tallest buildings at the time. It is an architectural masterpiece, especially at the time when it was built. With my pictures I always try to capture a new and mostly unusual view of the city from above. There are many pictures of the Colosseum from below and inside, but I think with this picture I was able to capture a new view that many people would never have seen otherwise.Editing
Yes, as I said above the photo is a panormaic shot made out of 6 single shots, which I stitched together in Lightroom. Also I did some basic corrections like white balance, exposure, contrast, some small color and lens corrections. And i think thats it. The shot is about 5 years old, so I cant remeber what I did exactly. :-)In my camera bag
When I go outside and explore new places, I always pack in my Sony A7R2 which is a beast camera body. With its 42mio. pixels I can easily crop in while post-processing, if something is not in the golden ratio e.g. With the Sony body always comes my Voigtländer 10mm f5,6 which is just the widest lens i actually know. The image section is sometimes a bit tricky, also because of the smallest open aperture, but for landscapes (especially urban landscapes like I do) it's my almost always-on-lens. For night trips I also pack in my gorilla pod and my Samyang 12mm f2. This lens is made for APSC, but on the Sony i still have about 18mm with f2.Feedback
I just want to say that I do not recommend anyone to copy my pictures, since they were mostly taken at a dizzying height and I go to these places and take pictures without security or permission. If you can not stop yourself from exploring the city from above, I can only advise you to keep your eyes open. not only for photo motifs, but especially for securitys and surveillance cameras.
