Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Ma-Me-O beach, which is a summer village located at southeast shore of Pigeon Lake in Alberta, Canada.

Time

It was shot during Horse River wildfire in Fort Mcmurray which resulted in evacuation of 90,000 people. I was temporarily staying in Edmonton, Alberta and decided to take a break from all the chaos. After doing a bit of research on google, I drove to this location around golden hours of long summer day and could not have hoped for a more beautiful or peaceful spot. Time was 9:21PM of May 13, 2016.

Lighting

I am relatively new to photography and my camera was 2 months old at this point of time. I always wanted to take a shot of sunset and it was the perfect day for it. No clouds and far from city-lights, this lake set the exact stage I had in my mind. Sun was in rush to call it a day and I realized I had to run some distance to get the barge in frame. Fortunately, by the time I reached there, ambient light and location of sun were just perfect for this kind of shot.

Equipment

I was using Nikon D5300 at that time with 35mm f/1.8G prime lens without filters. Photo was taken handheld as I was yet to purchase a tripod.

Inspiration

Being new to photography, getting a sunset shot was one of the top items in my to-do list. Also, after witnessing smoke-clouds and flame-red sky for days during Fort Mcmurray wildfire, this scene brought me back to a different and calmer side of mother nature.

Editing

I got lucky on post-processing side as I just had to fix the white balance after transferring the raw file from camera to Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I upgraded my camera body from Nikon D5300 to Nikon D750 recently, and I keep both of them in bag. Most of the times, 24-70mm f/2.8 is mounted on D750 and 35mm f/1.8G prime on D5300. I also keep 20mm f/1.8G prime and 70-300mm to cover other focal lengths. Spare set of batteries, rain cover, Zeiss cleaning kit, B+W ND filters, remote shutter release, and RRS tripod are few other items.

Feedback

Be prepared, reach early and have patience. Specially during dusk and dawn, ambient light changes at a much faster rate than it may seem. Gap of even a minute or two can result in completely different shots. So, the key is to have your setup secure and ready in advance. Take notice of entire frame in viewfinder and not just the main subject. Having an interesting foreground, to amplify the effects of setting sun, adds to the quality in these kind of shots.
