When the Portuguese first arrived at this place, in the early XVI century, they thought it was the mouth of a river. Some years later, after exploring the region, they discovered it was an oceanic bay, after all.
The name Guanabara comes from the Tupi language (native indigenous people from southeastern Brazil), goanã-pará, from gwa "bay", plus nã "similar to" and ba'ra "sea". Traditionally, it is also translated as "the bosom of sea."
This is undoubtedly the most famous portion of it. The Sugar Loaf, Urca, Botafogo and Flamengo quarters and the city of Niterói on the other margin.
