Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a local park in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

Time

This shot was taken on the morning of April 24th 2016. Both owlets were waiting for mom or dad to come back with some treats from hunting.

Lighting

On this particular morning, is was cloudy which lent to the nice even light. When shooting in treed areas, light like this really cuts down on shadows especially from nearby trees and their branches.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Canon EOS 70D with a Tamron SP 150-600mm lens handheld. It was shot at f/6.3 1/400sec and ISO was at 800. I did not have a tripod with me on this particular day which definitely would have helped get a sharper shot.

Inspiration

This was my very first experience seeing owlets in the wild and I was beyond excited and feeling very privileged to spend time with them. It was wonderful to see, not only their interaction with each other, but also with the parents who stayed in close proximity.

Editing

The only post-processing is cropping.

In my camera bag

Over the years I have upgraded my camera equipment when I can afford to do so. Right now I'm shooting with Canon 1DX Markll with the Canon 100-400mm Markll and the canon 1.4x converter for my wildlife images. I also do landscape work and use the Canon 16-35mm f/4L or a Tamron 24-70mm. For landscape I also use the Lee filter system.

Feedback

Taking shots of wildlife requires a lot of patience which I had to learn over the years. It can be frustrating trying to take subjects, especially birds, as they are constantly on the move. I have learned that sometimes I get better results if I park myself in one area and let the wildlife come to me. Also (and I feel very strongly about this}, wildlife needs to be respected. I feel a photographer should never intrude or interfere with the natural habitat of animals or birds just to get the shot. Nature should be enjoyed but also protected.
