An absolute masterpiece in the capture of this photo. I really like that you included the bridge in the photo as it has a beautiful contrast with the sky and water. Great photo!

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken along the banks of the Athabasca River, at the Town of Athabasca.
Time
I shoot this photo around 10pm, which is rare to see such a vibrant and active aurora so early in the evening.
Lighting
Night sky photography can be tricky. This photo was 8 seconds, because the aurora was so bright.
Equipment
I used a Nikon 800, and a Ronkion 14mm, combined with a tripod.
Inspiration
The Athabasca Bridge is a statement of the town. I had wanted to take a photo with the aurora behind it for quite some time, however it faces north east. I had to wait for a night when the aurora was quite active to take the photo, especially as it is taken within town limits.
Editing
I brightened up the shadows and highlights to make the aurora pop.
In my camera bag
For night sky photography I mainly stick to my 14mm. I love that it is manual focus. I also use a 17-55 and a 12-24.
Feedback
Set your focus to infinity on your lens. Take a photo, check the focus. Adjust a million more times, take a few photos and then pack up. Focus is the hardest thing when it comes to night photos, at least that is what I find. Not all lenses are the same, and the worst thing about taking night sky photos is coming home to edit them to find out they were slightly out of focus.
