Location
The photo was taken in the Columbia River Gorge on the Wahkeena to Multnomah Falls Trail #442 just outside of Portland Oregon. It's a moderate hike spanning approx 5 miles with about 1,600 ft of elevation.Time
Shot was taken at 1st light and was slightly overcastLighting
The sunlight was just peaking through in spots which made shooting this specific location one of the highlights of the day.Equipment
Shot with a Nikon D5500 with Standard Kit 18-55mm Lens, Induro Tripod and Tiffen ND 4 filter for an 8 second exposureInspiration
The goal for the day was to chase waterfalls and light. We came across this place and ended up spending half of the shoot there. There's 8 Falls on this loop and this one, only the 2nd, was definitely the most intriguing.Editing
I use Lightroom for all of my post processing. There's definitely some personal twists to this image to get to that deep cave feel but there was no Photoshop involved. In my camera bag
I travel pretty light. Other than my 18-55mm, I'll carry the Nikon 55-200mm and a few Tiffen ND Filters ranging from 2 to 8 stops that I'll switch up depending on the scene and amount of natural light available.Feedback
One thing I always do is get up early and be on location pre-dawn. I spend more time fine tuning where I'll shoot from than actually taking the photos themselves. I'll explore vantage points I haven't seen or tried before and am always studying how my favorite photographers fill a frame. My time is always limited on a shoot so detailed preparation has always been an essential component to a successful day out.
