Location
This photo was taken in Mont St-Bruno Provincial Park in Quebec,Canada. Herons are rare in the park but this one stopped by in spring during its migration North. This was taken on the edge of one of the lakes.Time
This was around 11AM on a sunny day. The Heron is partially covered in the shade of the trees, but most of its plumage is in the sunlight.Lighting
The bird was perched on dead branches on the shoreline and most of the time in the shade. I waited perhaps 10 minutes for it to move to a branch jutting out more into the water and was rewarded with a nice batch of direct sunlight through the trees.Equipment
A Canon 70D camera equipped with an L-Series 400mm zoom lens. I had no tripod at my disposal, but set the camera in rapid-fire mode. That way, one of the later shots was free of camera shake caused by activating the shutter.Inspiration
While I prefer small birds, I think the larger ones are majestic in their flight and appearance. As a nature photographer, this is but one of the many times that I was inspired by scenery around me. You can show me hundreds of photos of birds or animals from zoos or aviaries, but there is a special feeling when capturing images in the wild!Editing
No post-processing other than a 2-pixel sharpening of the image. In my camera bag
I travel light when I hike. So other than the equipment mentioned earlier, I also carry a doubler and a smaller zoom lens.Feedback
I may be repeating myself when I say this, but as a nature photographer my suggestion is to go out and play. And when you are hiking out in nature, keep your eyes open to your surroundings. You might take the same trail over and over again, but something new and special will hit your eyes.
