This photograph was taken just outside of Upington, the Green Kalahari region in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.Time
The time was 18:10.Lighting
It's always worth waiting for a shot like this. The big secret is to know your surroundings and how light and lightning works together. I purposely underexposed this shot to be able to catch the detail of the lightning for when it should appear. At sunset you also do not want to lose the colours of the sunset due to overexposure. In this case I pushed up the ISO and increased my shutter speed. Through doing this I could take out the shadows in the foreground on lightroom and photoshop in post editing and not lose any detail due to noise.Equipment

I love taking wedding photographs that's a bit different. I don't like making use of dramatic props to get the viewers attention. Therefor I always look for what is naturally there that will tell the story and make it unique. This is the Green Kalahari. It's people are unique and the area is unique. The couple are fantastic people. Why not wait for this once in a lifetime shot? It's a picture that will have them remembering this day until forever.Editing
I post process in Lightroom and Photoshop. Like with all my photographs these tools assist me with basic processing like taking out shadows, increasing light where I need it and sharpening my photographs. I basically work with what I have and enhance that. What you see here is what it was, just brought back to life in my digital darkroom.In my camera bag

Patience. Just have a lot of patience. Know your weather and weather patterns of the area. Capturing shots with lightning is a risky business. You can put your client in danger if you are not sure of how lightning in your area works or reacts. I would not suggest this to photographers who have just started with wedding photography and have not yet shot lightning before.
