Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in a small independent coffee shop in Petaluma, Ca, USA

Time

the time was mid morning

Lighting

I sat her across from a large open window, so that natural sunlight would illuminate a natural shade. What I wanted was soft diffused light lighting her and emphasizing her eyes.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5Dsr with Canon's EF 24 f1.4 Lens,The exposure setting were f 2.8 @ 1/125sec with an ISO of 500. Since the image was a hand held shoot I uses the speed of 1/125 to prevent camera movement , f 2.8 for the depth of field i wanted , and the ISO to 500 to be able the properly expose her.

Inspiration

Gigi is one of my favorite models, the combination of the red hair framing such beautiful skin and the blue eyes, is always a inspiration. I wanted to capture her in a natural unposed setting. The opertunity presented it self while we were getting a quick breakfast before our scheduled shoot. I took several images of her here, but unguarded moment as she is licking her fingers clean and another of her looking at me over a coffee cup were my favorite .

Editing

No post processing was done with the exception of a crop to get the 8x10 format

In my camera bag

I always care two camera bodies on location shoots the 1Dx II with Canon's Ef 24-70 f 2.8 LII mounted, and Canon's 5D 3 with the Canon Ef 70-200 f 2.8 LII. This gives me a range of 24mm to 200 mm without having to change lens in the fields. To help illuminate my subject I carry two Bolt VB-22 bare bulb flashes with the standard reflectors, and I use the pocket wizard Plus3 as triggers and receivers, and sometimes the Mini TT1 which allows me to use high speed syn. Two lightweight tripods to hold the lights and two Cyclone PP310 to power the lights. On this day I expected to be shooting in confined area so I also carried the 5Dsr with the 24 mm mounted.

Feedback

Try to use natural light when you can. The unguarded moment in real life are just as important as those we create.
