Night falls in the Historical Bikan Quarter, Kurashiki Japan.
Merchants have closed their shops, tourists settled in for dinner and the canal's boat services have moored for the night. The Bikan canal is peaceful and dreamy as the sun's final rays retreat for the evening.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was captured in the Historical Bikan District in Kurishiki Japan. This small area is preserved to remind visitors how life in Kurishiki was in the 17th-19th century. The canals were used to move rice from the boats to the warehouses before being distributed throughout Japan. It was a really amazing place, very quaint and serene.

Time

This was a sunset shoot. I arrived a few hours before sunset to finalize where I was going to to place my tripod. I had visited here earlier in the day so I had a few ideas, but you never know what can change when the time arrives. The moored boat is what ultimately made my decision for this shot.

Lighting

The lighting was out of my hands. I was hoping for a little more going on in the sky, but in the end the blue clouds added to the mood.

Equipment

This was taken with my trusty Nikon D750 and the Nikon F4 16-35mm lens. I do most of my landscape work with this lens, it has served me well!

Inspiration

The setting itself inspired this photo. During the day the canal was alive with tons of tourists, but once the shops closed, it really settled down. I wanted to capture the serenity and stillness of the canal.

Editing

This shot is a blend of 3 images. The base image, one for highlights and one for a the blue hour sky. I had to do some cleanup and remove a few people and some car lights in the distance. I also tweaked the colors to bring out their life a bit. All in all, this is a very close representation of what I captured, and really reminds me of what is was like being there.

In my camera bag

I travel fairly light I guess. My D750, I typically have my 16-35mm F4 if I know Im shooting landscape. If I'm concerned with other options, I might bring along a zoom. I use an RRS tripod, a few ND filters for water and clouds. Always a few batteries, the usually tools and cleaning supplies incase anything goes wrong.

Feedback

Getting great shots aren't too difficult when you have amazing subject matter. But don't let amazing subject matter make you lazy. Investigate all options and really focus on the details before committing to a shot. Before I choose my shot I snap some preliminaries and zoom in on my screen to really look at the details that make the shot. All too often you don't notice those details until post and it's too late to make adjustments then. For this shot I paid close attention to where the canal met the edge of the screen, how prominent the boat was, and the lights reflecting in the water.
