Behind The Lens

Location

I took a picture of this lovely owl at the Reelfoot Lake State Park. He was injured on his wing and they were rehabilitating him. He was very tiny. He could fit in the palm of your hand.

Time

I love this picture. I wanted to visit the the park and take pictures of the animals. I couldn't wait. I got there that morning when they opened up.

Lighting

I love using natural lighting with nothing more then just with me and my camera. Morning is my favorite time to shoot.

Equipment

I used a Canon but this was back in the day I used film. This was taken in my early days learning about my camera. At that time I just had it sit on portrait. I know that's an amateur move but I was an amateur at the time and you have to start somewhere. Of course I moved out of my comfort zone and use more of my camera now. I also used a 18mm-55mm lens. He was in a small cage to keep him from flying so his wing would heal. So I had to adjust the lens to focus on the owl and focus the cage out.

Inspiration

The owls was so little and almost camouflaged into the limb I couldn't help fall in love with the little cutie. Shoot what you love and you can never go wrong.

Editing

Since it was film and not digital I just took the roll off to be developed at a place that only specializes in cameras and developing.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Cannon with two lenses. Which are the 18mm-55mm and 200mm. Sometimes it's just the 18mm-55mm lens because close-up is my favorite.

Feedback

My advice would be to use a close-up lens under a 55mm. Early in the day before 11:00am on a clear day gives very good lighting if you want to go natural.
