Behind The Lens

Location

We were out in Encinitas, CA while on a walk with my dog and I saw a beautiful bush with hibiscus flowers near the sidewalk. There was a perfect flower on the ground and that's when I knew that Brandi must wear it on her head.

Time

We were out in the early afternoon.

Lighting

Near the coast, overcast all day is a pretty common occurrence. It really makes shooting at any time a breeze which is why I always bring my camera even on short walks with my pup.

Equipment

I used a Canon 40D with a Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM lens for this photo.

Inspiration

One of my biggest inspirations in the photography community is Andrew Knapp and his dog MoMo. When I saw the hibiscus bush and the wall near it, it reminded me of something he would take advantage of, so I did, too!

Editing

I messed with it a bit in Photoshop, cleaning the wall to make it look nice, brightening the photo slightly and adding a small pink/red tint to the shadows helps create the "girlie" look I was going for.

In my camera bag

My Canon 5D Mark III or my oldie but goodie Canon 40D, my 50mm f/1.8 STM, 17-40mm f/4L USM lenses as well as my Canon AE-1 film camera to capture those unique photos.

Feedback

Work with your dog every day. Brandi didn't just become a master flower balancer overnight. Also, you have to remain patient when working with animals, especially dogs and put yourself in their shoes. If you get frustrated, they get frustrated. And of course, bring lots of treats. Inspiration is everywhere, you just have to open your eyes to see it.
