Location
This photo is shot in Denmark in The Wadden Sea National Park in an area called Marbaek. It was start September and the heather was blooming with beautiful colours. I was out looking for location for a photoshoot with a client and I took my girl Becca with me to model for me. I was actually about to turn the car around as I was driving to the National Park because dark clouds was approaching and it was starting to rain. But I am glad I continued so I could get this shot.Time
The photo was taken late afternoon around 5pm.Lighting
The lighting was really special - because it was late afternoon the worst harsh sun had disappeared. The big rain clouds gave me a huge softbox in the sky to work with and the little sunshine that came through was enough to create a little backlighting to light up the raindrops coming down.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7000 which I have had for years now. The lens was my favorite - Nikon 70-200mm f/2,8. I love it for dog photography because of the great bokeh and it's speed. I didn't use any other equipment - okay, some dog treats :-)Inspiration
Becca my dog was running around the heather fields - and as she suddenly sat down to just sit and stare out into the big field with a calm look, I simply loved it. It wasn't until I came home and saw the photo on my computer that I noticed the raindrops - and that just did the trick for me - I really liked the photo.Editing
Yes I did do some postprocessing to make the photo pop and be more fairytale like as that was the way I saw it in my head. I did the usual levels and white balance corrections but besides this I worked with the colours in the heather to make them stand out more and giving the photo one simple colour - pink/purple.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon 50mm f/1,8 with me. It is easy to carry and I can be close to the dog. If I have my backpack with me my Nikon 70-200mm f/2,8 always comes with me - It gives me better and more bokeh than the 50mm plus the dog can run around far away from me and I can give it som 'personal space' and capture it's true personality when it's running around having fun without me disturbing the fun. I always always carry dog treats, squeeze toys and poopbags :-)Feedback
Find a colourful location it can be a heather field like this og maybe wild flowers. Don't go out in harsh sunlight in the middle of the day as it will give you bad harsh shadows. Look for softer light like in the late afternoon / start evening or a cloudy day with a little sun breaking trough. Have fun with it and let your dog have fun with it. Good luck :-)
