This photo was taken in my studio in Calgary, Alberta Canada on a gloomy day. But that didn't matter because we were nicely isolated where we could manipulate the light and wardrobe at will.Time
I wish I knew what time of day we took this photo - the studio was dark and my focus was strictly on the model and achieving our 50's/ early 60's pinup vibe.Lighting
Lighting was a pretty easy 2 strobe light set up - 1 soft box to light her body and 1 beauty dish to light her beautiful face.Equipment
My go to equipment for this shoot is a Nikon D750, Sigma 50mm Art lens, (2) strobe lights from Strobepro outfitted with 1 octagon soft box and 1 beauty dish.Inspiration
I was inspired by this model's amazing vintage vibe, her makeup her hair and her wardrobe all oozed of the "Mad Men" era of the by gone 50's/ early 60's. Naturally we wanted to capture essence of this amazing time period and freeze it in time for the next 70 years to enjoy.Editing
As far as post processing was concerned I opened the photo in Adobe Photoshop and did a bit of skin smoothing to give her that flawless shine and converted to black and white and adjusted highlights, shadows, contrast, clarity etc. until I found the perfect sweet spot for this photo. In my camera bag
My camera bag (which is the vibrant blue Kelly Moore Songbird shoulder bag) inside you'll find a Nikon D750 and possibly a Nikon D3300 as well as a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 and a Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art series lens. Sometimes depending on the day you'll find the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 or the Nikon 14-24mm if I am venturing out to capture the aurora or milky way galaxy.Feedback
If anyone else wanted to achieve an amazing pin up shoot my advice would be to find a model that already has a passion for that time period as they will already have an amazing wardrobe and are most likely versed in the makeup style and hair style techniques required back then. Pair this unique model with a strong make up artist and hair stylist that is versed in that by gone era make up style but can make it pop on film. The final and most important part is to find some very basic props from the early 50's/60's to really make the photo travel back in time to complete the overall look. And don't forget to have the model always touch up the red lipstick !!
