Female Quetzal: Note the lack of the long upper tail coverts and the lessor colors than the male. This photo was taken in the San Gerardo de Dota tropical cloud forest. This magnificent bird (maybe the most beautiful in the world) was a specific target for our trip (staying at the eco-lodge Paraiso del Quetzal!) He did not disappoint. During mating season, male quetzals grow 4 extended upper tail coverts that dangle up to 3 feet as can be seen in this photo. The Resplendent Quetzal is listed as 'Near Threatened' by IUCN; however, they are protected in Costa Rica
