This photo of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament was taken in Christchurch New Zealand a year following the February 2011 earthquake.Time
It was taken very late in the afternoon on what had been a sunny day.Lighting
The photo was taken with the sun directly behind the building. I took it from a low angle to ensure I captured as much as I could of the front of the buildingEquipment
It was taken with a Canon EOS 55OD. No Equipment was involvedInspiration
Immediately after the catastrophic February 2011 earthquake, I was sent to Christchurch to work as part of an emergency response team. I saw a great deal of the damage first hand and worked with people who's lives had been devastated beyond comprehension. The experience had a huge impact on me. Sadly another devastating earthquake has recently struck our beautiful country (Nov 2016) and aftershocks still continue to this day.Editing
I've edited this photo to depict my emotions during my time in Christchurch immediately following the Earthquake. I've edited the image I captured black and white, as I believe it best portrays a look of bleakness, sadness, heartbreak and loss. For me it represents the damage to not only this building but to a great many of the Christchurch buildings. In my camera bag
I have a twin lens Canon EOS 550D, Olympus E-PL7 and often use my iPhone 5s.Feedback
I draw on my emotions when I'm editing a photo. I wanted this photo to tell a story and elicit an emotional response. My advice is to trial different edits until your version of your story is told or until you're satisfied with the end result of your artistic expression.
