Location
This photo was taken in La Jolla, San Diego, California. This is the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier. As one of the world's biggest research piers, it is used for boat launching and a variety of experiments. Data on ocean conditions and plankton taken from the pier since 1916 provide an unparalleled source of information on changes in the coastal Pacific Ocean.Time
This was right around sunset during a photo group meetup of mine. Conditions were considered not ideal because it was so cloudy it was blocking the sun. However, I always try to teach that theres always a great photo to be found. At this moment the clouds slightly parted just enough to allow the sun to shine through as these surferes entered the water.Lighting
When the clouds are dense like this and reflecting the gray onto the ocean it really lends itself well to a black and white photo. And with the sun just peaking through creating varies levels of darks and lights in the clouds there was create texture throughout the composition.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 70D, Canon 10-18mm IS STM lens, Manfrotto 190 Go! tripod and wireless Yongnuo triggers. Settings were 10mm, f9, 1/100sec, iso100. My full list of my gear visit my blog on my website with more specifics.Inspiration
This pier is always a great spot to take photos. At the right time with the right tide you can acheive great relfection of this large structure. And with some clouds in the sky it builds a really fun composition.Editing
Post-processing here was simple. Converted to black and white with some contrast adjustment. In my camera bag
I enjoy a good variety of photography and therefore a good variety of equipment. My camera is a Canon 70D. Its amazing. The tilt-touch screen, the wifi, the video features, and the quality make it a great all-around camera. I have 5 lenses, from macro to wide to telephoto. Various lights and modifiers for models, product, etc. ND filters are often a must when shooting outside so i have a variety of those. I got in the drone game and got myself a DJI Phantom 3. Its a new genre full of amazing opportunity. I can shoot the same place a million times but when I use the drone its like a fresh location for me. I do alot of long exposure shots so wireless triggers are a must. The yongnuos i have work perfectly with the flashes. And as an avid scuba diver i have a gopro for underwater shots, soon ill be looking into taking my primary gear below the waves with me. I have a small shoulder bag from city or hiking. And i have a carry-on sized bag that fits almost all my gear inlcuding the drone. For a full list of gear see my blog on my site.Feedback
When possible I always try to tell a story. I noticed these two surfers heading in the water and waited for when they were in just the right spot.
