Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during my exchange year in the US while on a trip to the West coast. The Grand Canyon in the picture is just one of the many beautiful places there. At that time I just got my Canon 60D and was not that experienced yet so that every shot was in a way an experiment.

Time

It was raining all morning but luckily the sun came out just before my travel group, consisting of 50 exchange students and a couple teachers, arrived at noon. Unfortunately we only had a few hours to explore the area but at least those were probably the best of the day - the rain was just gone, some moose were roaming around, and the canyon's colors were just wonderful as sun replaced rain.

Lighting

In this image light doesn't play a major role but since I didn't bring my tripod I was thankful for the sun due to which I was able to use an aperture that allowed me to bring both, foreground and background, in focus while still having quite a short shutter speed. If the dark rain clouds had still been there the same settings probably wouldn't have worked that well without using a higher ISO resulting in a lower image quality.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon 60D and a Sigma 18-250mm, f/3,5-6,3 lense. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

For this photo I was looking for a spot from which I could capture the beauty of the canyon while adding something to it. At that point I didn't know yet what I wanted that "something" to be, so I tried out different spots and angles, and took many pictures until I finally found this tree with that long stretching trunk. I've always liked to have boundaries on a picture's side(s) to add depth and lead to the point of interest. And this was the perfect spot to not only add boundaries but a complete frame!

Editing

I've loved photography since I got my first camera as a child but at that time I just changed from compact camera to DLSR and didn't have much experience with it. Therefore I still used jpg and not RAW, which made it harder to post-process the picture. Luckily I had a graphic design class during my year in the United States so that I was able to brighten the darkest spots (the branches of the tree) a little bit up using Photoshop.

In my camera bag

The first thing I pack is my Canon 60D body - I particularly enjoy the folding screen because I like taking pictures from different perspectives, overhead and down on the ground. I also really appreciate its robustness, image quality and many functions. Secondly I pack my Sigma 18-250mm, f3,5-6,3 lense. It's my only lense right now (downside of being a student) but I'm quite happy with it. It's great for travelling, it covers wide angle and zoom and isn't that heavy. Also quite useful is a remote release, it's very light and small and you never know when you'll need it, so I always have it in my bag - just in case.

Feedback

As always in landscape photography the weather is a big factor, at Grand Canyon and everywhere else in the world. Be prepared for all conditions - sun, rain, maybe even snow depending on the season. Generally landscape photography requires a lot of patience and preparation to get the perfect shot but don't worry too much if you can't spend hours and hours at the same place, you can still take some great photos. If you happen to be there while the light is special (e.g. sun beams through clouds, golden hour, ...) try to capture it. If not don't waste time waiting for it, you only have a limited amount of time and there are other things that can make a picture great. There are thousands of different angles, natural frames, the rule of thirds and many other techniques you can try, just walk around and be creative.
