Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Salk Insitute In San Diego, California. The institute consistently ranks among the top institutions in the US in terms of research output and quality in the life sciences with focuses on molecular biology and genetics; neurosciences; and plant biology.

Time

Access to the insitute is only allowed during regular business hours. As a serious research institute they dont allow serious camera equipment or real shoots. But i managed to get my tripod low and in place, inches above the water, quickly before discovery to take this shot on this cloudy winter day.

Lighting

The clouds on a day like this act like a giant softbox for that giant light in the sky. It creates nice even tones throughout the image and can help get information from the darks. However, to create drama its good to intensify the contrast and tone to achieve the feel you want.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 70D, Canon 10-18mm IS STM lens, Manfrotto 190 Go! tripod and wireless Yongnuo triggers. Settings were 10mm, f14, 1/30sec, iso100. My full list of my gear visit my blog on my website with more specifics.

Inspiration

As a long time person of art and design, architecture has always been an inspiration to me. Salk is known for its amazing architecture. Concrete, water, details of wood and strong lines makes this a beautiful location for photos. This combined with so much precise symmetry. On this particular day it was right after some rare rain, which I knew would lead to great relfections.

Editing

Post-procesing was done in Photoshop. Only a few things altered. I made the concrete elements a bit more grayscale, I straighted perspective lines of the architecture and boosted contrast/tone.

In my camera bag

I enjoy a good variety of photography and therefore a good variety of equipment. My camera is a Canon 70D. Its amazing. The tilt-touch screen, the wifi, the video features, and the quality make it a great all-around camera. I have 5 lenses, from macro to wide to telephoto. Various lights and modifiers for models, product, etc. ND filters are often a must when shooting outside so i have a variety of those. I got in the drone game and got myself a DJI Phantom 3. Its a new genre full of amazing opportunity. I can shoot the same place a million times but when I use the drone its like a fresh location for me. I do alot of long exposure shots so wireless triggers are a must. The yongnuos i have work perfectly with the flashes. And as an avid scuba diver i have a gopro for underwater shots, soon ill be looking into taking my primary gear below the waves with me. I have a small shoulder bag from city or hiking. And i have a carry-on sized bag that fits almost all my gear inlcuding the drone. For a full list of gear see my blog on my site.

Feedback

With architectural photos it helps to get into the mind of the architect. Its more than capturing an entire space. Its about capturing moments. Find the right angles with the right subject matter. Using composition to direct the eye properly around the photo. Sometimes you want texture and complexity but often try to find the simplicity in it all. Use negative space. And as with all photography, deliver purpose and story.
