This photo is taken in Lower antelope Canyon. The rocks have a very unique shape and texture and are made up of sandstone. When sunlight hits the rocks, it throws off different shades of colors. The shape and texture is also because of flash floods that occur almost every monsoon.

Behind The Lens

Location

Lower antelope canyon, Page,Arizona, USA

Time

Around 4pm

Lighting

Lower antelope canyon is all about lighting. When the sunlight enters the canyons, it spreads across sandstone rocks with different shapes and unique textures, throwing off different shades of light. Looking at the walls, one can see fifferent shades of orange, red, purpule, magenta, yellow etc. The view is truly mesmerizing and all you will think about is the place is not man made. There is only one thing that makes antelope canyons so special, that is light.

Equipment

I used Nikon D7100 and a sigma 18-35mm Art lens. I didnot use a tripod for this shot.

Inspiration

Texture, shape and colors! I had just one question in my mind, how is this formation possible!!?? I took this shot scooching down in a very tight corner just to capture the uniqueness of the rocks. Wavy formations, combination of yellow, red, orange and pink, natural textures giving it what i call is an 'icecream look'. I could actually picture a softy that i had in McDonalds! The shape combined with those colors will leave you awestruck!! Through my photographs,I want to inspire people to travel more, to leave mundane lives for few days and get out there and expereince what mother nature has for us. Somethings in nature are truly matchless and even if man can make such views using tons of tools and machinery,i bet it will not be as good as the natural formations!

Editing

For this shot i didnt have to do much post processing. Infact, this was one of the photographs that was quickest to process, thanks to the beautiful light and formations! All i had to do was accentuate the shadows a bit and boost the brightness a bit. I took an underexposed shot to save the highlights. Some dodge and burn here and there and boom! I got a great shot! :)

In my camera bag

Ii now have a Nikon D610, tokina 16-28mm lens and a 70-300mm VR lens. The D7100 and the sigma 18-35mm lens i used for this shot is just a backup.i have a carbon fibre Sirui T2204XL tripod.

Feedback

I would definitely recommend taking exposure brackets. Most of the dslrs support exposure bracketting. You would need this to capture all the details from highlights to shadows. The light in such places is very very dynamic and capturing everything in one shot almost becomes inpossible. In some places,i actually had to take about 10 exposures. I ended up using 3 or 4, but my point is you will have to rely on exposure bracketting. Another recommendation, keep moving your head! Look around, everywhere you see,you will find unique shots! Look up,look on your left, right, back and ofcourse front! Try to capture the texture of the rocks in your photos. The texture or the patterns in the rocks is the one very important thing that makes the image very unique. Apart from that, i would recommend not to play with Shutter speeds. Just make sure your aperture number is atleast 9. I used aperture 9-13 to have all the details in my shot, starting from foreground to background. Carry a tripod to support your camera and there might not be much space,so try to be very quick in setting up the tripod before tourists come and accidently kick your tripod. You should be very confident with operating your camera. In such places, you will not have much time experimenting or looking for buttons. There are too many people there and before they come into your shot, you will have to setup your tripod, make the composition, set exposure bracketting and take the shot. I literally practised this before leaving! Also, it would be best if your tripod legs dont spread too far. The more the tripod legs spread, the more are the chances to have someone stumble on your tripod. Regarding lens, keep a mid range zoom lens. Wide angle lens will not work, you will need a decent range that covers a bit wide range and a good distance. Telephoto lens and a prime lens is a big no no. Forget changing your lens there, its too dusty and you will end up having dust inside your camera. If you want two lenses, keep two cameras. While taking a shot, try to take the side wall as well, so that the lines on the wall act as leading lines to the main subject. Theree is no hard and fast rule, but a general rule, which just makes the photo more pleasing to look at!
