Location
This photo was taken on the eastern coast of Lake Michigan in New Buffalo, Michigan. It was the first time I had been there for a sunset.Time
It was the time of year when the daylight stretched into the evening hours. The beach where this was taken is a gathering place during the summer for family, friends and couples to meet, walk along the shore and watch the sunset be swallowed by Lake Michigan. The sun didn't disappear until about 9:00 pm that evening.Lighting
The lighting was the perfect golden light that we all look for. It warmed up everything it touched and gave a nice glow to coming off the water.Equipment
Canon 7D Mark II with 24/105 f4 lens. Handheld.Inspiration
It was the grasses blowing in the wind that caught my eye to begin with. Moving to have the grass silhouette against the sky and water helped bring out the contrast of the photo.Editing
There was no post-processing.In my camera bag
What I have in my camera bag changes depending on what I'm doing. This time I was out for a long motorcycle ride so I go very light on equipment. Along with the Canon 7D body and 24/105 lens there was a small Canon 430 Speedlite and an extra battery.Feedback
Always keep an eye opened for the unexpected. Keep an open mind too. Be sure to look at the smaller details of your surroundings and be willing to experiment with exposure. Try shooting from slightly different angles. Shifting a couple feet, or inches, can dramatically change the final image.
