Building Ranch Pride – Ogilvie Spring Roundup Grant County, New Mexico
The camaraderie and pride in ranch work lifts everyone’s spirits as one participates in what it takes to do today’s work. The earned respect Mr. Ogilvie has as his due comes after a lifetime of learning what one needs to know about animal husbandry. Watching the Ogilvie roundup with their experienced cowboys was such a delight this morning. I share with you one unedited photo of five men each with a specific job. There are many opportunities at spring roundup besides branding when it comes to management, like a first round of vaccinations or tagging calves and neutering males.
Cowboy singer Brenn Hill has set to words the unique pride of spring roundup in “Burnin’ Hair,” his song about a long day of community branding in Utah’s Wasatch Range. (You can Google it for the lyrics).

I was not aware they still branded cattle. In the east they just wear ear tags.

The five guys in this photo all have their job to do. As you noted one is branding, another has the innoculation device, ear tag, casteration, and the one holding the head of the animal still. Off to the left is a cowboy and his horse holding the hind legs via rope tied to the saddle horn.
