Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while vacationing in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I shoot primarily family sessions but love to capture my travels and share. Architectural details and nature always catch my eye!

Time

This photo was taken mid-day as we were exploring the promenade walk downtown.

Lighting

I like the way the shadows from midday combined with the lines of the stairway. I wanted to capture this every day object in an artistic way.

Equipment

This image was taken with a Nikon 7200 in natural light. No flash, no tripod.

Inspiration

While on vacation, I was looking for architectural details that could be focused on closely to grab your attention.

Editing

Yes, I converted the image to black and white and with all my black and white images I deepen the contrast and shadows.

In my camera bag

I never leave home without my 50mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.8 lenses. They stay on my camera almost all the time. I usually through in the 85mm 1.8 for good measure.

Feedback

Remember that great shots are all around you. Slow down and look for details that might go unnoticed. Shoot interesting objects from different perspectives and focal lengths for a variety of images. My favorite thing to do is really zoom in on the detail that caught my eye and fill the frame with it. Then I back up and look for other ways to frame it.
