Behind The Lens

Location

I was in my parents back garden, looking to experiment with a new macro lens I had just purchased.

Time

To be honest, I took this at the time of day photographers normally shun, around noon. But like I said, at the time I was playing with a new lens and was more concerned about how it worked (and if it worked) than setting up the perfect shot with the perfect light.

Lighting

The lighting for this was more of a happy accident that deliberate. I was just in the right place at the right time.

Equipment

This was taken on my old, yet dear to my heart, Canon 20D with a Tamron macro lens (it was so long ago I forget the exact specs for the lens. It didn't get to me like the camera did. (handheld)

Inspiration

My intent that day was to take pictures of flowers (to put the macro lens to the test).

Editing

Yes, but not a lot. Simple adjustments in the exposure and light balance, and a small about of vignetting. All done in Photoshop because I didn't have Lightroom at the time. Later, after purchasing Lightroom added some sharpening.

In my camera bag

My bag has changed since taking this. I normally carry a Nikon 300, 18-105mm lens, 70 -300mm lens, polarizing filter, 0.5 neutral density filter, Platyod tripod and a beat up old tripod whos manufacture I have long forgotten.

Feedback

To be honest, I will say from the experiments back then and what I know now, Don't be afraid of the high sun (in the right circumstances, like taking photos of flowers). A good neutral density filter and the right angle will create a powerful image. However, the best thing I can offer is a quote from Photoshop painter Bert Monroy, "Just play." He was talking about digital painting, but it is true for all artistic endeavors. Mistakes are where you learn what works and what doesn't, the more you make (and learn from) the more you will improve in the long run.
