AS I understand it, the waterwheel didn't drive the stamping battery, but provided water to sluice the crushed quartz and gold. The wheel sits buried in its original position and although the stream is currently 'dry' the ground around the path of the stream is spongy and clearly will return to stream conditions when the rains come.
