Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken during a woodland walk near Dunkeld, Perthshire.

Time

This was taken early morning, probably around 9-ish. We were trying to get further up the glen for a picnic and take some landscape photos of the village in the sunshine, so to get this was a bonus.

Lighting

All natural light. I tried to make sure there was as little glare as possible from the sun position, as it was streaming through the trees on the left hand side.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon 1100D, 18-55mm kit lens with tripod and remote shutter. Decreased the shutter speed to blur the flow of water over the rocks.

Inspiration

I had been discussing landscapes with Colin Prior on one of his tutorials and it was him who suggested this area for some wonderful variations of woodland, landscapes and nature photography - he was definitely 100% correct! I tried to apply the rule of thirds in this photo, along with the bending of the water to lead the eye back into the picture, not quite a leading line, but a leading curve.

Editing

No post processing at all.

In my camera bag

In my bag now is my trusty Cannon 5D MkIII. For everyday shots, I use a 24-105mm f4, but it all depends on the type of shot I'm going after. For sports I use my 70-200 f2.8 which is heavy, but the speed and sharpness of images is exceptional. For night-time I use my 35mm f2, 50mm f1.8 and 16-35mm f4 for stars and long exposures. A good tripod is a must, as is a remote shutter, especially for long exposures. The 1100D is paired with a Tamron 18-200 f3.5-6.3, which is great for the initial ranging and the crop frame also increases the effective zoom by 1.6, giving 320mm. This lets me adjust my position and set-up before taking my final image.

Feedback

Explore your local environment and ask other where might be good for some photos. We would never have found this glen or taken this image if it wasn't for local knowledge.
