This is probably the first image i took and processed and thought to myself that i can take photos. I remember that i was staying with my sister near London and in the morning it was a priority to go and get a photo of Big Ben. I arrived there to find that i had forgotten my tripos, so i used the wall to balance the camera and took the shot. The day was a little dull, but the clouds were fast moving. There were crowds of people walking along the bridge, so i waited for the best moment where there were no vehicles and took the shot. The shot was taken on 22nd January 2013 at 11:02 amLighting
I originally wanted the shot to be with blue skies and white clouds, however that day it was overcast with the clouds moving quite fast. There was still ample light coming through to allow me to take the shot and keep it sharp.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon 50d, with a 18-55mm kit lens. I had forgotten my tripod, so used the wall to balance the camera.Inspiration
I have always wanted to take photos of London, as its so vibrant and there is so much to see. I think Big Ben is iconic and wanted to capture a shot of this. I remember looking at similar photos before going to London and seeing the amount of similar shots of Big Ben. I always like to put my own spin on the shots i take, so decided to include the bridge from the river angle and to tone it to a similar colour to Big Ben.Editing
Because of the overcast from clouds, i decided to make this is toned image, with the tone resembling the colour of Big Ben itself. I toned the shot through photoshop and applied the initial tone, and then adjusted the tone until i was happy with it.In my camera bag
In my kit bag i normally carry a Canon 7d along with my trusty Canon 24-105L. This is usually my go to lens for everyday, however i also carry a Sigma 10-20 and a Tamron 70-300VC. I also carry a selection of ND filters and cleaning wipes, as well as a gorrillapod, so i dont have to remember to take the tripod all the time.Feedback
There is always something to photo in London, whether thats the iconic structures like Big Ben, Tower Bridge or the Shard, however when looking at photographing building in London, do factor in the weather patterns for the day as cloud can alter the image, as well as the amount of people around you. Sometimes having lots of people is a good thing as it shows movement, but sometimes it can hinder the shot your trying to make. An example is if you try and take a shot of the millennium bridge leading to St Paul's cathedral, you need to be up at dawn to get the bridge without anyone on it. If you go during the day, the shot will have lots of people in it, which can detract from the leading lines. If you want clean shots, you are best to go to London at dawn, but first go the day before to scout out the shot you want to take to try and visualise how it will look.
