Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the top of Sol Duc falls in Olympic national park.

Time

This was taken early morning after a short hike to the falls. The wind in the morning was strong and lighting low. I did not have my tripod with me and I only could take it hand held. So I lowered the F-stop to 5.6, knowing the depth of field would be changed but might bring a more artistic look to the image.

Lighting

With the low lighting I was hoping for some more natural light. The clouds just started parting in the morning, and so I waited to get a better shot and have background in more light. My patience paid off.

Equipment

I use a nikon d3300 with a sigma 18-35 1.8. I unfortunately didn't have a tripod so I hand held the shot and lowered the f stop to compensate. I used a tree next to me to help stabilize the image.

Inspiration

There are many falls and places that have been photographed many times in the national parks. I wanted to make sure I didn't do the same thing as everyone else. I wanted to Not take a silky smooth waterfall as that was not the feel the falls gave me, instead it gave me drama and power. I knew the bridge was going to give some stability to the image and wanted to show the contrast of the calm stable bridge against this powerful waterfall.

Editing

I brighten up the photo in Raw processing and added a bit of contrast and clarity. The light streaks where brightened locally with the Nik's viveza and Dfine was used for the noise.

In my camera bag

Sigma 17-70 and 18-35 1.8. I have the typical cleaning equipment, UV filter, NG filter, and polarized filter, and remote.

Feedback

Do not go for the low hanging fruit shot. Look for unique angles and decide what you want people to feel or get from the image. When in doubt shoot it multiple of ways and exposures. But always have a clear idea of what you are going after.
