Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at my friends studio in Ipswich Suffolk UK, in the bedroom boudoir set. I was trying to find an interesting different boudoir shot that wasn't based around the bed or dressing table.

Time

It was a late shoot to fit in after work, so very late evening around 10/10:30ish. It was the last set up of the evening we had also shot some Marilyn Monroe styled sets and a fashion swimwear set.

Lighting

It was two 750w Bowen's Gemini heads one with a large 80*100mm Bowen's softbox to the left hand side of the image just out of shot, and a shoot through umbrella to the right hand side behind camera just to lift the shadows slightly.

Equipment

It was shot on a Nikon D80 with a Nikon 18-105mm. My first camera I got for using in the studio. Two Bowen's Classic heads with Bowen softbox and translucent umbrella. Triggered with Yongnuo flash triggers.

Inspiration

I was trying to find an interesting different boudoir shot that wasn't based around the bed or dressing table. So I decided to try an create the look that the model glancing out of a window while getting dress. Also the model had a great bum and we wanted so show this off, and in turn this created a really nice shape to her shoulders.

Editing

It was process in Adobe Lightroom, mostly just straightening and adjusting the white and black levels. Converted to black and white in Photoshop, where I removed some moles and freckles on the back and a slight crease along the spine using frequency separation.

In my camera bag

Last year (2015) when I took this, it was the Nikon D80 with Nikon 18-105mm, Nikon 50mm 1.8f, Nikon 35mm 1.8f, Nikon 40mm 2.8f and a Tamron 28-300mm. Today after some serious investment in kit.... Nikon D610, Nikon D300, Nikon 24-85mm, Nikon 24mm 2.8f, Nikon 50mm 1.8f, Nikon 85mm 1.8f, Nikon 80-200 2.8f, Sigma 105mm 2.8f, Lensbaby composer pro and Lensbaby edge 80, Nikon SB700, Sekonic L358 and if I can squeeze it in my Fuji X-Pro1 with either the 35mm 1.4f or 18-55mm 2.8-4f lens. I also carry a couple of ND filters to be able to use studio lights at a low f-stop, a couple of diffusion filters, couple of old crystals, a couple of clear lunch bags to shoot through and my 3LT Vyv tripod. Plus an extra grab bag with two Westcott Ice Lights & a Elinchrom Quadra RX.

Feedback

Cut out all light to the room and just let the studio lights flood in. Shooting it again today I would mostly probably just use the modelling bulb turned right up, a low f-stop and bump up the ISO. I get the bum to pop, get the model to stand on tip toes, popping her bum towards camera from the hips. Also very simple underwear having tried this again since but with strapped bra, stockings, suspenders and more ornate knickers it didn't look as simple and elegant... Just keep shooting until you get the shot, get the model to make small movements until the mix of elegant pose and bum look right and balanced.
