Very nice and mystical! The "dark" woman emerging seemingly out of the fog. Only suggestion might be to crop a little tighter side to side to bring out the focal point just a little more. Great capture!

thanks! the wide crop is intentional in this instance, the next in the series is a tight crop :-) thanks for the feedback ~E

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken last Autumn in a walled garden I have access to. As all the flowers were beginning to fade away, this bush however was in full bloom! I'd made the headdress ages ago and knew that'd it would suit the model, Shadier Aeon to a T paired with the really fragile Edwardian dress.
Time
Mid morning - always the best time to shoot in Ireland! The light is so soft, you don't need light equipment.
Lighting
This is all natural light, all my outdoor work is. I rarely even have an assistant so we don't have a reflector, or it's propped up on my bag (and edited out!). It's fun and a challenge to shoot alone, makes the model very relaxed plus I try my best to keep my models happy. Happy model makes excellent pictures. Also before you go out, LOOK at the model. Decide what angles you like/dislike and let them know too. It'll save a lot of hassle in the long run.
Equipment
I've a minimal Canon kit of a 5DM2 and a 2.8 70-200mm lens. Thats it. A reflector! I've studio lights but I like being in nature, it's ever changing and every moment captures a different magical snapshot in time.
Inspiration
The magpie headdress I'd made ages ago! I kept moving it around the office, spare room...office! Then Shadier contacted me and I knew I'd got the concept. Magpies like shiny things, but are predominantly black and white. This is as close to black and white I'll ever go! I shoot my models in very old "wounded birds" vintage dresses or clothes. So I knew this Edwardian gown would suit perfectly with the jet beads and sequins. I did her hair 1920s style to suit and then did makeup and as a last minute thing painted her arms black! It was a gut thing to do - delighted it worked!
Editing
Now I'd need to open the PSD but there's 6 images comped into that. I come from a illustration book cover background so it's pretty easy for me to do. There's a lot of minute color adjustment on the background to give the definition.
In my camera bag
Smoke bombs, lighter (at least 4!), lipgloss, reflector, monopod as a reflector holder, spare cards, spare battery, spare Olympus E620 kit as backup, painkillers, antihistamines, face wipes, usually if it's cold hot water bottle, warm then water.
Feedback
Look, observe, awareness, analyze, plan & prep, shoot. Look at the model, what would suit her/him? Observe the models features, how do they move? Favour one side? Look about. Be aware of nature, weather, seasons, models have feelings, don't be a idiot. Analyze and plan what you want to do. Studio vs natural light? Fantasy vs fine art. The clearer you are in your head the more realized th final concept. Plan and prep, do exactly that. Get the glue gun out! Shoot, put it all together!
