As I watched the red panda at the National Zoo feeding on leaves among the branches high above I noted that some of the branches hung remarkably close to the outside wall. Might the red panda someday leap to the outside and escape, I wondered. That night he did. He was spotted the following afternoon in Adams Morgan district not far from the zoo and was safely recaptured.
