Location
This was taken at Mt Baker in western Washington State near the Canadian border. It is a view of old ash and mudflows from an old eruption of this currently quiet volcano. The top of the mountain was shrouded in clouds.Time
It was late afternoon with playful patches of sunlight in the foreground filtering through the trees.Lighting
It was a sunny afternoon with a slight haze. It was the perfect time of day for this kind of shot.Equipment
Taken with a hand-held Canon 5D with a Tamron 24-75mm zoom lens. No filters were used.Inspiration
The sheer beauty and splendor of the location inspired me to take this (and other) photos. Mt. Baker and the surrounding area is a photographers dream come true!Editing
I used PhotoShop and PhotoScape to optimize color balance, saturation and sharpness to my liking. I did not use Lightroom on this one and did not want to "overdo" the post-processing as this shot was already quite pleasing right out of the camera. In my camera bag
I use a Lowpro light backpack with 2 Canon cameras, several lenses, some filters, extra memory cards and batteries, light meter, charger, card reader, flash unit and cleaning accessories. My bag content tends to vary somewhat with the location I am going to.Feedback
Composition was important in this shot which would not have been as interesting without the foreground. Naturally the location was a main consideration. Try to keep this kind of shot as "natural" looking as possible without obvious over-processing and saturating.
