Behind The Lens

Location

It was a lovely warm day in early spring March 2016 in the beautiful state of New Hampshire. Moving from a tropical country, the Philippines, I ended up in this lovely state. This place offers a lot of natural beauty for landscape photographers. It may not have the striking grandeur of the west, but it's peaceful country side will surprise you with calm lakes, stream and brooks. I was with my spouse when we were driving around the town of Ossipee. While driving with no destination in mind, we stumbled upon this rushing brook. The snow was melting fast causing the rushing water in this isolated stream.

Time

We started driving from our place early in the morning. We drove around other towns before we went to Ossipee. It was getting late in the afternoon and that's when we decided to head back home. We lost the signal of our phone and the Google map stop navigating. We lost our way and ended up on this country road and that's how we discovered this place. It was around 5 pm when I got out of the car, scouted the area and found this spot.

Lighting

This location was in a remote area. The road is lightly traveled. It is wooded and dark even with the sun was still up. I saw the sun through the woods and right after that, I knew where to put my tripod and frame the shot. I waited until I was able to see the sun in my camera. I used a slow shutter to capture the right amount of light.

Equipment

I always have all my camera equipment with me whenever I leave the house. I don't have that much camera gear so it's easy to pack everything. I used my favorite camera, Nikon D7100 and Tokina 11-16mm lens. Since I needed to slow the shutter speed, I used a Benro A200f tripod. A timer played a big role to eliminate moving the camera when I press the shutter. If you can afford and you want to be serious in landscape photography, better buy a cable shutter release. It will help you a lot.

Inspiration

I always like being in nature and water is my favorite subject to photograph. I was looking at other photographers work on Viewbug and I saw a lot of landscape photos with water as the main subject. I watched some videos on Youtube on how to take a silky effect on water. So I've always wanted to take this kind of photo. I got lucky that I found this perfect place. This is one of my favorite shot I have done.

Editing

I think most, if not all, photographers do post processing with their photos. We all know that you camera gear won't be enough to give you what you really want. Post processing is part of our artistic skill. Others do heavy editing and spend more time doing it but I'm too lazy to sit in front of my computer editing photos, therefore, all of my photos are minimally edited. I just lightly enhanced the color, then adjusted the shadow, brightness and exposure. Plus add some clarity to add more contrast and detail. Every photographer has his/her preferences when it comes to editing. Just remember when is too much and when is enough.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot of camera gear to carry. I only have Nikon D7100 and Tokina 11-16 mm for my landscape photos, Nikon 3300 with 70-300 mm for some bugs or birds or any moving animals to capture. A B+W 10 stop ND for that silky effect on the water and Tiffen 0.9 Filter to have the smooth but still see movements on the water. If you want that smooth and silky effect, you need to have a remote cord, it will be your best friend. Of course tripod is a must for every landscape photographer wether hobbyist, amateur or professional. I also carry an extra battery just in case I forgot to remove the other battery from the charger that's still plugged in in my room.

Feedback

Doing landscape photography is a hit and miss. You don't really know what you'll end up getting. Everything in nature changes constantly and fast. You might have an idea of what photos you wanted to have but it won't happen in just a day or one try. You need to be patient. You need to be ready for anything that you don't expect and you should not expect that everything will work as you planned it. Look for other photographers work for some inspiration. If you're new in photography particularly landscape, watched videos online about landscape photography. It will help you learn a lot things on how to take better photos. And the last but not least, keep on trying. Take a lot of photos of the same location or the same subject from different angles. Once you found a place that interests you, scout the area. If possible, check every corner. Look for the foreground that interest you then decide how you want to frame it. Try to visit again the next day and you'll be surprise how different it will be compare to the first time you went there. And most importantly, make sure you have your memory card with you and not at home still stuck in your card reader connected to your computer.
