Location
This photograph was taken in Ocean City, Maryland at Northside Park. The life guard at the beach club where we were staying told us that it was the best place to catch a sunset. This photo was taken in the middle of a 365 day challenge to photograph the sky everyday wherever I was and whenever i could. The purpose was to practice seeing interesting visuals in something we see everyday.Time
It was a summer evening and a bit early for a sunset. The luck was two-fold, it had not yet become crowded at the pier and the golden color and reflection with the silhouette of the pier was what I considered a perfect photo. What was fun about my sky project is that for photos like this I had to come early, stay late and realize that the sky changes second by second.Lighting
I try to rely on natural lighting for my photos. In this photo, of course, the light is the subject. To emphasize that, the camera's angle in relation to the light makes a difference and often, for me, it is a function of experimentation. I generally do not use a tripod in this situation so that I can quickly move around and experiment with the lighting and other factors present.Equipment
I used a Canon 50D and a Canon Kit lens EF 24-125 MacroInspiration
I was very committed to the 365 Day Sky project and made a concerted effort to find new and interesting locations, subjects and points of views. More than anything, though, my project and my commitment to taking photos every day are inspired by a love of photography as well as a desire to improve my skills.Editing
I generally do as little post processing as possible. In this photo there was no post processing, not even cropping. I use Lightroom for postprocessing when it is necessary to enhance the final product. In my camera bag
My camera is a Canon 70D. My go to lenses these days are my Canon EFS 70-300 Macro and my Canon EFS 10-18 Wide Angle. Also in my bag is my Kit Lens from a previous camera Canon EF 24-105 Macro. My speed light is in the bag too, just in case. I learned the hard way a long time ago to have my lens cleaning kit, a backup battery and charger and a backup memory card with me at all times.Feedback
Something similar could be absolutely anything. For me, I have taken the time necessary to actually see what is happening around me and look for inspiration. Here are three specific pieces of advice I follow: 1) Shoot, Shoot, Shoot. This does not mean take a thousand photos of one subject. It means find one subject and take several photos from different angles, or with different lighting/settings. 2) ALWAYS have your camera (and all of your favorite lenses) with you. I am one noted for screeching off the side of the road (safely) to take a photo. 3) And finally, be patient and committed. Get up early, stay up late, go out in the rain and snow and the beautiful weather and explore new places and often you have to just wait. These are all easy for me because photography and capturing a scene like golden sunset brings me JOY.
