Behind The Lens

Location

I was looking after my daughters dogs and she had just purchased this small Frangipani tree. I was captivated by the blemish free perfection of the flower with it's delicate yellow throat, so I decided it would be lovely to capture it. I took a couple of pictures on the balcony but felt the flower was being lost in the background so I took the plant inside and tried several surfaces and locations in the house. I finally carried the plant into her bedroom and sat it on the bedside table, the wall colour set it off beautifully.

Time

I remember it well because I was dog sitting and enjoying the afternoon with a drink and a cigarette on the balcony, when the plant caught my eye. I grabbed my camera, which is never far away and the photo was taken on the 27th of April 2016 at 2:47 pm.

Lighting

I really wanted to capture the delicate perfection in the flower and found the outside light too strong, drowning out the detail in the petals. I tried a variety of positions and backgrounds throughout the house, when finally in the bedroom with lower light and the dark wall for a background I finally captured the beauty I was seeing.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Canon PowerShot SX510 HS. Aperture: f/5.6. ISO: 800. Shutter Speed: 1/80. Focal Length: 44686/1000. No flash. This was the only equipment used as it is the only equipment I have. I rely heavily on my eye to achieve the shots I get, one day I hope to have some really good equipment, then I will be able to really get serious about photography.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this photo came from the pure natural beauty of the flower and my desire to share what I see, with others.

Editing

The photo is as original as the flower and there was nothing more to be done to this picture, that could've made it any more beautiful.

In my camera bag

The Canon PowerShot SX510 HS is the only photography equipment that I own. I have dreams of one day having fabulous photography equipment, then I will be able to take this passion of mine to the next level.

Feedback

Firstly I'm truly humbled and grateful for all of the attention this picture has summoned. I never expected such a reaction from such a simple shot of my lovely daughter's lovely bloom. Thank you everyone for your support, I love photography and hope to one day have some awesome equipment so that I can take this hobby to another level. I'm not sure that I'm qualified to hand out advice, I truly don't have a clue about the technical side of photography, I just see things that capture my eye and try to replicate what I'm seeing in picture form. The best advice I could give is, persevere, be passionate, fall in love with your subject, be innovative, try different backgrounds and light before you settle. Don't think for a minute that you can't produce great photos with basic equipment. Happy snapping!
