Congrats with being a contest finalist. I hope that she had something soft to land on?

Thank you very much! To do this shot, I used two Profoto B1s in an otherwise pitch black auditorium. I had the light on the face of the model set three stops brighter than the light on the back of the model. I had an assistant fill a bucket with white flour and throw handfuls of it towards the model as she did a leap. It took a few dozen shots to get it perfect but overall, the shoot was very simple. (Besides having to clean up all the flour, of course)

Location
This photo was taken in the Snow College concert hall. It was a fun time getting the stage cleaned up after we were done shooting.Time
We got to the location around 7pm after the school's orchestra was finished practicing. We set everything up and shot and were out of there around 9:30 pm.Lighting
The focus for the lighting was to have it as dramatic as possible. What you can't see is that there is a really ugly concrete wall just behind the model. In order to keep that out of the shot, we had to put both of our Profoto B1s behind the model and point them more towards the camera. It made it difficult to keep her in focus but the final effect was worth it.Equipment
I used a Nikon D800 with a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8. It was lit with 2 Profoto B1s with Profoto softboxes and triggered by Pocket Wizards.Inspiration
Looking through my Instagram feed, I saw a lot of people posting photos of smoke bombs and sparklers because it was around the 4th of July. I was talking with my friend about doing a cool dramatic shoot of her dancing and we got to talking. Eventually, we decided that throwing a few handfuls of flour at her mid-leap would make the perfect shot.Editing
Hardly any. Just color correction. There was no manipulation of the background or model or any other aspects. In my camera bag
In my bag I keep two Nikon D800s, a Sony A7sii, a 70-200mm, a 24-70mm, a few primes, and a strobe.Feedback
The biggest advice I have regarding studio photography is to have a vision in mind but not to let that stop you from letting the creative juices flow when you stop shooting. Some of my best shots were stemmed from shoots with an ENTIRELY different purpose than the shots I ended up with. Photography is expressionistic. Don't follow the rules too much.
