Behind The Lens

Location

Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Time

Early morning sunrise, about 05:45am.

Lighting

The best time to photograph this lake is early morning when the light just hits Hallet Peak, and reflects in the water, while leaving the trees unlit. Once the light hits the trees the shot is not as pleasing. This opportunity lasted for only few minutes (about 3 minutes or so ) and the sun got covered completely by clouds. I was lucky I got the shot.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D with Canon EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens (zoomed to 15mm, aperture: ƒ/16, 2s exposure ISO 100 ) on a Manfrotto Tripod. To enhance the reflections I used a CPL filter.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the reflection of Hallet peak in the water. It's feels like heaven on earth to be here at sunrise, to see the mountain's reflection in calm water, and light only hitting the peak of the mountain.

Editing

I post-processed this picture in Lightroom, removed the highlights all the way to zero, opened the shadows a little bit and the shot felt good.

In my camera bag

I always carry my three lenses: 10-22mm , 24-105mm and 70-200m, a few CPL filters, timer remote, and extra battery whenever I go visit this park. For landscapes I usually use 10-22mm and 24-105mm, and for wildlife and close up shots I use my Rokinon 70-200mm f/2.8

Feedback

Be at the location at least 10 minutes prior to sunrise and set up everything ready. It's always great to use CPL filter to enhance reflections. I always shoot at f/16 to make sure everything is in focus, and use Timer Remote to minimize camera shake. For shutter speed I use 1-2 sec exposure to make water look so calm. This works even when there is some small wind.
