Behind The Lens

Location

I go to school in Toronto, Canada. I was talking a walk behind my school and there are some wooded paths to walk along. It was a lovely spring day and I took advantage of it.

Time

I remember it being in the afternoon. It was a weekend and I needed to get out. I love going on photowalks, especially when the sun is starting to set. It was in the fall/winter time and I really like the light in these seasons.

Lighting

This was my first attempt at double exposure technique with a Diana Toy Camera. I tried my luck at the double exposure technique to see what I can make of it. This is one of my favourites as this was further on in the shoot and I was starting to figure out how I wanted the double exposed photos to be like.

Equipment

I used a Diana Toy Camera.

Inspiration

I am in Film School, so it originally started as a project for an art installation that would have a photography element to it. From there, I started to reflect on my own work as a photographer. I have used digital camera's for majority of my life. This was my first attempt at film photography. I am used to taking thousands of photos and sometimes not being mindful of the images I take. With my attempt at film photography, I wanted to take a more mindful approach to the medium. My challenge to myself is to become more aware of the content that I am capturing - whether it was digital or analogue. The double exposure technique was something I was looking into. I wasn't trained on how to do it, and this photo came from the day I attempted to try it out. The photo really came from looking at my surroundings and seeing what would look good together in a photo. I wasn't sure how the photo would develop, but I am certainly happy with this result.

Editing

This photo is strictly an in camera technique. This was from taking one photo on the camera and not winding the film, so that when I took the second photo that it would develop on the same frame. And this is another reason why I adore this photo is because of the lack of post work.

In my camera bag

I typically work with a Nikon D7000 with either a telephoto lens or a 18-105mm lens. I am saving up for some film and a Canon A-1 so I can continue to do film photography.

Feedback

Experiment with the medium. Film Photography is entering a new era. There is a growing interest with the medium again. With a renewed interest in the art, there will be lots of opportunities to experiment that couldn't be done with a Digital Camera. Just try it out and see what works and what doesn't work. Try it sparingly as film and development can be pricey. But if you can try it, do it.
