Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at St Vrain State Park about a hour north of Denver Co. It was a beautiful summer day and the pelican's were abundant at this little state park.

Time

It was at the end of August and my father in law was in town from Texas. He and I have a special bond thru photography. He loved taking photographs before his memory started to fade. So when he is in town we go out together looking for places to take pictures. When we arrived at the park it was 4:30 pm, and the timing was perfect the pelicans were flying in looking for their fish dinner.

Lighting

Early evening sun light.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Canon 70D with my 100 - 400 lens. No time to attach my tripod so I found a spot to sit down and us my knees for support.

Inspiration

This was the first time I had seen so many pelicans at the park so the excitement took over to capture these beautiful birds.

Editing

The lighting was perfect so no need to do any adjustments.

In my camera bag

The first thing I pack is my Canon body 70D, then my lens. My Canon 18-135 mm lens that came with my camera purchase it is a great go to lens in my bag. The next lens was a great find on craigslist a Canon 100-400 mm zoom lens. Works great for bringing those long distant shots closer. For those close up shots is my Canon 60 mm macro lens, great for those great unexpected little surprises. Then there is my newest purchase Canon 16 - 35 mm wide angle lens for amazing landscapes. To finish a tripod is a must for clear shots.

Feedback

I find having patience with yourself when trying to capture birds in flight is key. Sometimes you will get a sharp shot and sometimes you just miss it. But just keep trying and you will get that shot you are seeking.
