Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this in Pacific Grove, CA., USA. I am a Native Californian and was raised on the Monterey Peninsula, of which Pacific Grove is one of the main attractions. The Pathway runs from Cannery Row all the way to Sunset Beach at Asilomar; an absolutely breathtaking walk, as you can see from this image, especially when the ice plant is in full bloom. From the point depicted in this image, you can watch the fishing fleet when they are out fishing for Sardines (the reason that Cannery Row was built) and Salmon and Tuna when they are in season. You can also see the Sea otters playing just off shore and further in the distance a gray whale breaching when they are migrating. This is a photographer's paradise. The air is so clear after the morning fog dissipates, that you can see clear across Monterey Bay to Moss Landing and Santa Cruz. I always take my gear bag fully packed with several lenses ,filters, lens cleaners, and of course my tripod.

Time

I shot this in April of 2016, mid-morning; to be there at that time of day was such a treat, as the salt air was brisk, the Gulls, Cormorants and Pelicans were out feeing as well as the abundant ground squirrel. The air is so clear after the morning fog dissipates, that you can see clear across Monterey Bay to Moss Landing and Santa Cruz.

Lighting

The sun was extremely bright and one must use a polarizing filter or even a Neutral Density filter.

Equipment

I shot this in April of 2016, mid-morning using a Canon EOS M3 Mirrorless camera in auto Landscape mode, a tripod, a polarizing filter, and also a lens hood on my lens helped with the brightness.

Inspiration

You don't need inspiration when you visit the Pacific Grove area of the Monterey Peninsula; inspiration abounds all around you. As I stated earlier this area is a Photographer's paradise and that is no exaggeration. Several famous photographers such as Ansel Adams (from which comes my true inspiration) and Edward Weston have spent many hours shooting the gorgeous seascapes found here.

Editing

With the Canon EOS M3, the images are crisp and clear and very little adjustments are needed; in this case no post processing was done.

In my camera bag

Just a little note: I have since upgraded to a Canon EOS 6 Mark II. Featuring an impressively high-resolution 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor, the EOS M6 Mark II is capable of producing imagery with notable clarity and dynamic range, as well as a broad sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 and low noise to support working in difficult lighting situations. I have 3 lenses: the standard, 18-55, the 55-200 and my latest, the 15-45. Several filters always go with, the polarizing, Neutral Density and UV. Lens hoods for each lens, tripod with bubble leveler, lens cleaners, a couple of Model Release forms, extra batteries and battery charger and last but not least an additional SD Memory card.

Feedback

In this particular location, the weather may be warm one minute, and foggy, windy and chilly in the next. I always dress in layers so that I am ready for any weather changes. Hat, scarf, sunglasses, and lots of patience go a long way on the Peninsula. Always double check your batteries, and bag contents before leaving on a shoot, take water, snacks and be prepared to make a day of it if you can. I breathe, eat and sleep photography and find so many rewarding locations that seem to be put on this Earth, just to be photographed! Most of all. ENJOY what you do; don't make it seem like work and your skills will improve and come naturally.
