Behind The Lens
Location
this was taken in my living room, all of the elements of the composite were in the same location using natural light from the windows.Time
it was around 4 or 5 oclock on a sunday afternoonLighting
I decided to use natural light so it would have that warmth and would be easy to duplicate over the 3 or 4 images i had planned to take.Equipment
it was shot using a Canon 5D mark III, using a 24-105mm lens on a manfrotto tripodInspiration
it had been in my mind for awhile, after a photographer friend had mentioned he needed a little "lens cleaner". i knew he meant liquid to clean the lens, but my imagination being what it is, pictured a very tiny window cleaner that had a full time job cleaning lenses. I have a breakdown of this image on my facebook page as well as several tutorials.Editing
the three main images were layered and masked so that the sizes and light sources were as believable as possible. when setting up for each shot, i planned ahead to match up the focus as close as possible with a shallow depth of field for the camera and a slightly wider focus for the full body shots of myself. (yes its a self portrait) a last minute detail was adding in the "dust layer" so i could be cleaning something away from the lens. it was an all white layer set to "screen" in Photoshop and with an opacity of about 20%.In my camera bag
My go to lens is my 24-105mm lens. but i also have a 70-300mm L lens for shooting live events and things where distance is a factor. rounding out my bag is three 600ExRt flashes, the 50mm 1.2 featured in the picture, a 17-40mm wide angle lens and a MP-E 65mm macro lens.Feedback
your imagination is your best tool, but also the trickiest one to match up to with other tools. Even a mediocre camera can produce incredible images if you really work on your set up and figure out exactly how you want it to look. if you can break your ideas down into layers and plan everything out, the editing and completing a picture is a much smoother process. try and try again, even with mistakes you are improving.
