Behind The Lens

Location

Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

Time

I originally wanted to take a photo at sunset, but the weather forecast was not favourable for the evening at all, so I decided to head down to the lake as soon as I arrived in Wanaka. It was mid-afternoon, very cold and windy, but a few photographers were already lined up along the beach, so I figured it must be worth a shot.

Lighting

I wanted some sense of movement in the picture, but without smoothing out the water completely. It was so incredibly bright that day though, that I ended up using the big stopper. Normally a smaller ND filter should have done the job!

Equipment

Sony A77, 16-50mm f2.8, Zomei big stopper, Manfrotto befree tripod

Inspiration

This is probably the most photographed tree in the whole of the New Zealand South Island ;) I couldn't go to Wanaka and not attempt a few shots!

Editing

I only adjusted the contrast settings a bit to bring out the shadows and slightly turn down the highlights, especially in the sky.

In my camera bag

My basic set-up is always my A77 with the 16-50mm kit lens. I would say I use this lens 85% of the time, as it's a great all-rounder. When I'm going on wildlife shoots, I always have the longer 70-400mm with me too, and on a city break, my Tamron 10-24 has to come too. Usually I carry my befree tripod around with me too, as it's nice and light, and easily fits into a daypack.

Feedback

I was lying on the ground for this shot. Don't be afraid to look like a weirdo, try shooting from different angles and different heights to get the shot you're after.
