Inspiration
There was a front coming in just off the Island. It created an unbelievable surf that twisted and turned. The photos I shot those few days as the front raged out at sea where amazing. A privilege to watch a gift to be able to capture.
Editing
I exposed for the waves then did a second shot of the sunset. In Lightroom I brought up the details, lightened the shadows and sharpened by approx 10%. In photo Shop I dropped in the sky and worked the colors into the wave. Used Dodge and burn tools to bring out highlights and deepen darks. Used the sharpen tool to get high def. on the wave and rocks in the foreground. Merged layers and increased saturation a tad and increased brightness a tad.
In my camera bag
Canon 1D Mark IV Canon 24/70mm 2.8 Canon 70/200mm 2.8 On/off camera flash Rain sheet for camera protection. Memory cards Gaffer tape Xtra camera battery Monopod
Feedback
Before you shoot understand the wave pattern. Know before you start where the action is likely to be. Your settings should be somewhere around 1/1250 sec, f5.6 to 11 (depending upon your desired DOF) ISO adjusted appropriately for available ambient light and fstop. A monopod is a must. Your camera needs to be still and accurate. Get comfortable and wait for the show to begin. I'm not kidding about the sun screen and bug spray :).
