Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my studio in Vancouver

Time

This was done in the afternoon

Lighting

The lighting was pretty simple I used a 7' octoc box for the key light , and used a 5 ft strip box for side lighting reflected into a 8x4 white foamcore panel to soften the light reflecting back at Jimmy . Then I used a background light with a 20 degree grid on it pointing at the backdrop.

Equipment

The camera I used was a Canon 1DX with 70 - 200mm f2.8 lens I usually shot hand held and as far as the lighting all lights are Elinchrom.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this photo was Jimmy's well toned body , Jimmy is 55 and looks amazing. He's worked hard to keep in shape and it shows . So we finally convinced him to pose in front of the camera. I'm glad he did,he was a great subject once he relaxed

Editing

Yes I did some minor post processing , I like to do as much as I can in the camera but for this photo I did do some curves adjustments in photoshop.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon 1DX with usually a Canon 300mm f2.8 or my Canon 600 mm f4 since most of my outdoor shooting is at the race track and some sporting events. In the studio I usually use the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 or sometimes the 80 mm Ziess f1.4

Feedback

The best advice I can give to anyone shooting in the studio is make your subject comfortable as possible that brings out the best in your subject .I usually try to meet my clients ahead of time and get to know a little about them . So when I'm in the studio we have something to talk about and hopefully that gets them relaxed and they forget that they are in front of the camera and just have fun and hopefully we can catch some amazing images. As far as lighting when I go into the studio I have an idea of what I'm looking for in the end result and work my lighting to achieve that look . As anything in life the more you practise and experiment the better you become and it almost becomes second nature to see the light. In the end remember to have fun and cherish those moments with your clients .
