Location
Yellowstone National Park 2015Time
Mid day, about.Lighting
The light was a bit tricky as it was cloudy but at the same time the sun was trying to break through. I used the natural light and haven't done any particular editing.Equipment
Nikon D7100, nikkor 10-24mmInspiration
As soon as I saw these tree trunks I thought of burned out matches.Editing
Yes, the smoke isn't authentic. I added it later for the effect of "burned out matches".In my camera bag
My most commonly used lenses are 10-24 for landscape, 24-70 for all round and car photography, 70-200 for close ups and depth of field shots. I like to carry a few nd-filters and my remote release. I love the 50 mm but lately I haven't used it as much. I have a Nikon D7100 camera house.Feedback
In this case it was my imagination that made me take this photo. I also loved the clouds. Don't be afraid to go outside when it's cloudy. Just make sure it's the right kind of clouds to get that magnificent depth and mood of the image. Oh, and you need a wide angle lens too. Using wide angle lenses can cause heavy corner distortion so get to know your lens before going out there. You could get disappointed otherwise. Know its limitations and use its strengths. That's my advice.
