Behind The Lens

Location

This was a lucky find, as my friends and I were travelling from Atlanta, Georgia to the Great Smoky Mountains for some Fall color shooting. Our GPS stopped functioning mid-way, and we got 'lost' to bump into this amazing serene view. Getting lost is not always a bad idea, just have your mind open :)

Time

Wow, it's been a long time since I've uploaded this. But this was a casual mid-day shot. No harsh sunlight as it was partially cloudy, but that is what brought out a different mood to the scene. Only sunrise/sunet/golden hour aren't the best times :D

Lighting

Just a casual mid-day shot. As much as i love the golden hour timing, this was a lucky find and had to adjust with the available mid-day non-harsh partially cloudy lighting. It's amazing how the current circumstances makes you adjust your mindset for the shot you want or need.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 70D, with the 18-135mm kit lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Honestly, i wanted to capture the 'peace' that we felt when we were here. This was in the middle of a very small town with plush houses, with people boating/kayaking etc. on this calm lake with the perfect chilly weather. The lake was so surprisingly calm that i didn't even have to use my tripod for a long exposure to capture the reflections. Really glad and proud about this shot.

Editing

Usually for my landscape/nature shots, i try to saturate the colors a bit to pop out the colors to draw the viewer's attention to it. But before that i adjust the contrast slightly towards the positive end to make it slightly more moody. Highlights were reduced as demanded.

In my camera bag

I usually try packing ALL of my gear, to not miss out on any occasion. My only camera body right now is the Canon 70D, with its kit lens 18-135mm. Eventually bought the 50mm prime, followed by the Sigma 10-20mm f4 wide angle lens with manual focus (really helps). My last and final lens purchase was the TAMRON 70-200mm f2.8.

Feedback

For landscape shots, people usually travel to their preferred locations with certain compositions and views in mind, and might tend to stick to that. My advice is do that, AND look for other 'unplanned' sceneries. You never know what you might end up finding, either while getting lost, or just plain exploring. This location was a pure lucky find on our way to the Great Smoky Mountains (just a casual day trip), and honestly this is the best shot taken that day, even after including all of my Smoky mountain pictures). Always remember to have patience, observe, be prepared, and never forget to enjoy :)
